Surgical Technologist

Surgical technologists are are an integral part of the surgical team, assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists and registered nurses in providing care to patients in the operating room.

The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual ensures that the operating room or environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Students interested in the program should: be in good physical and mental condition, be able to perform under stress and possess manual dexterity. The Cisco College Surgical Technology Program is a one-year certificate program. 

The program includes hours of clinical observation and experience in the operating room as well as  lecture and laboratory classes. After successful completion of the required curriculum, students earn a certificate.

Cisco College Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to this program must fulfill the general requirements for admission to the College. The procedure for seeking admission to the College follows:

  1. Complete the Cisco College application
  2. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 
  3. Talk to a counselor about testing

Prospective students should also remember that acceptance by Cisco College does not guarantee admission into specific occupational programs. Additional factors considered for admission may be a satisfactory record in high school or college, placement tests and other criteria.

Application Procedure
The Surgical Technology Program is a limited access program with one start per year in August.  To be considered for admission to the Surgical Technology program, interested persons should:

  1. Complete SRGT application to the college (available from April through May)
    • As part of the Surgical Technology Application you are required to provide the Surgical Technology Program Director with a copy of your immunization record containing proof (titer, immunization or physician's documentation of illness) of the following immunizations and a negative Tuberculin skin test:
      • Varicella
      • Bacterial Meningitis
      • Tetanus-Diphtheria
      • Hepatitis B (2 of the 3 doses must be administered prior to the program start.  The 3rd dose must be administered prior to clinical start in the Fall semester)
      • MMR - x2
      • Tuberculin skin test
    • Many clinical sites utilized throughout the various Allied Health Programs at Cisco College require a background check and/or drug screen prior to participation in the clinical portion of the program. 
  2. Selection Criteria
    • GPA no less than 2.0
    • Biographical essay discussing why you want to become a Surgical Technologist
    • Completion of pre-requisite courses with a grade of "C" or better or current enrollment and satisfactory progress.
    • Any additional academic, occupation/allied health, or science related courses taken and passed with a "C" or better are viewed favorably
    • Formal interview with a panel, including but not limited to the Program Director, Division Chair, and other allied health professionals.
  3. The Surgical Technology Program is a strenuous program requiring your full time commitment and attention.  It is a limited access program and accepts no more than 10 students; as a result, the selection process is taken very seriously

FAQ's

Are the Surgical Technology courses offered in the evening hours?
Due to clinical requirements all courses required to complete the Surgical Technology Program are only offered during the day.  Most classes are offered between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.  Clinical hours are established by the clinical site; usually between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

Are Surgical Technology courses offered online?
No.  Surgical Technology courses are only offered on campus in a face-face setting and at assigned clinical sites.

What are the working conditions for a Surgical Technologist?
Standing for long periods of time; Ability to lift and move heavy objects;  Must be focused;  
The Surgical Technologist can be exposed to communicable diseases, unpleasant sights, odors and hazardous materials.

Do I have to be certified to work as a Surgical Technologist?
Yes.  Texas HB643 requires that persons who want to pursue a career as a Surgical Technologist in Texas must successfully complete an Accredited program and maintain certification through an approved agency.
